The Abubakar Asiddiq Islamic Center on Industrial Mile Road: a two-storey off-white building with sage green arched panels framing pairs of windows, and a terracotta base.

Masjid AbuBakar, Columbus, Ohio

From a storefront to ten acres, built by its own community.

A peaceful, family-oriented masjid on Columbus’ West Side. Five daily prayers and three Jumuah khutbahs, open to all.

Twenty years, two addresses.

AAIC began with a handful of families renting a storefront on Sullivant Avenue. Ten years later, the community opened a masjid of its own.

A handful of families lease a small storefront. Open ductwork, exposed pipes, and a tarp under a leaking ceiling.

  2. 2014 The campaign

With the West Side community growing, AAIC sets out to raise about $2.8 million for a first phase: a prayer hall for 1,200, and washrooms.

  3. Oct 2014 591 Industrial Mile Rd

The new masjid opens on about ten acres. More than 600 come to Friday prayers, and 250 children attend Quran classes.

  4. Upstairs The second floor

Planned at opening as the next phase. Today it holds the library, classrooms and the event hall.

  5. 2023 30,000+ square feet

About 7,000 worshippers come through every week, according to director Horsed Nooh. October 2024 marked ten years in the building.

“The community came together and approved the idea to start a mosque. Before, this place was empty.”
